Gerbils: The Ideal Small Animal Pet! |
|
Gerbils, the most common of which is the Mongolian Gerbil—Meriones unguiculatus—is considered by many to be the ideal small animal pet. Gerbils are: · Very easy to care for—even for beginners. · Not nearly as smelly as other rodents. This is because Gerbils are desert creatures and drink far less water—resulting in less smelly urine. · Not as high-maintenance as other rodents, since they produce little waste, and therefore require less frequent cage cleanings. · Not prone to biting. Young or untamed gerbils might nibble out of curiosity, but that habit is very easily broken. Tame gerbils will only bite if they are extremely frightened or in pain. · Braver than other rodents. They are extremely curious and playful. Any time you open the cage door, expect an inquisitive greeting. All new additions to the cage are thoroughly investigated without fear...and expect a nosy pet to watch you as you move about the room that houses the cage! · Are not nocturnal. They sleep in short bouts throughout the day and night. They will commonly wake for a couple of hours, then sleep for a couple more, and then repeat the cycle. Feel welcome to learn more about Gerbils by visiting the many informational pages throughout this site! |
