The Gerbil’s Nest

Gerbil Wheels for Running

Gerbils, like hamsters, adore running in wheels.  However, they put a great deal more “oomph” into their gerbil wheel running than the relative waddling of their puffy pet rodent counterparts.

Comparable to pet mice,  gerbils get into wheels and run like the wind.  They get going as though they were out in a field and taking off as fast as possible.

The gerbil wheels provide gerbils with that ability to run as fast and as long as they can, even though they’re inside their cages.  They love to use this fun and practical cage accessory to expend some of their ample energy.

Without a gerbil wheel, gerbils will have a great deal more energy to spend, and will take it out on their cages and other accessories and toys.  Usually, this will mean that they will chew and dig in ways that go beyond “normal” for a gerbil.

Certainly, gerbils chew and dig a great deal (and this means a lot) but with all of the extra energy, they will begin attacking their cages instead of the designated chewing items.  They’ll bite into seams and tubes of the cage, chew incessantly at the bars, and destroy anything else they can get their paws and teeth on.

Furthermore, the gerbil running wheel will allow your gerbil to use his or her muscles in the way that they were designed to be used in nature.  Gerbils are very active and are used to doing a lot of running, digging, and jumping.  To do so, proper muscle maintenance is necessary.

When you buy your gerbil running wheel, make sure that it has a solid floor, and is not the type with rungs or bars to run on.  While they may be alright for other rodents, gerbils risk getting their legs or, more commonly, their long—often knobbed—tails caught in the bars of the wheel, causing painful and often fatal injuries.

Many plastic (plastic means easy to clean) solid-surface running wheels are available in pet stores to give your gerbil a fun and safe way to spend its energy.
