If your gerbil ever becomes lethargic, makes clicking noises when s/he breathes, or has other symptoms of illness or injury, it is important that you take him or her to the vet as soon as possible. To prepare for such a time, you should find a veterinarian in advance. Keep in mind that not every vet will treat gerbils, so you will need to ask a prospective vet specifically about gerbil care. Once you find a vet for your gerbil, make sure that you keep their telephone number handy and know their hours and the services they provide. You’ll also want to keep a plastic travel critter keeper handy in case you need to make an emergency trip to the vet. A single trip to the veterinarian for a gerbil isn’t so expensive that it should be prohibitive. It usually ranges between $25 and $40. If you need to use an emergency clinic after hours, things might get a bit pricier; anywhere from $40 to $140. To make sure that you’re getting a fair price with your services, check those out in advance while you’re looking for the right vet.
