The Gerbil’s Nest

Keeping Your Gerbil’s Teeth Healthy

Gerbils’ teeth are always growing.  In order to keep them from over-growing, they naturally have a habit of gnawing and chewing on everything they can get their paws (and teeth) on.

If you don’t give your gerbil some adequate gerbil chews, then he or she will satisfy this need to chew by attacking the cage and everything in it.  This means that any wooden or plastic items will soon be destroyed, and the odds that your gerbil will escape increase dramatically.

Furthermore, chewing on plastic isn't always safe for gerbils, as they can accidentally swallow bits, or cut themselves on sharp edges that are created.

Instead of letting this happen, give your gerbil lots of safe things to chew on.  These items can include untreated wood pieces, and designated “gerbil chews” from the pet store.

Wood gerbil chews can be made by cutting up clean, untreated wood from a lumber store, or by buying wooden gerbil chews from the pet store.

Other gerbil chew options include hard flavored snacks and special hard chewables including some made from pumice and other safe products from the pet store.

Don’t forget to save your toilet paper and paper towel tubes.  Gerbils will happily shred them in 30 minutes!
