The Gerbil’s Nest |
Gerbil Nesting Material |
Gerbils enjoy making nests in which to sleep, but to do so, you will need to provide them with appropriate nesting material. Though there are many kinds of nesting materials sold in pet stores for small animals, you have to be very careful when purchasing such items for gerbils. Any fluffy, cottony, or wooly nesting materials should be avoided. Gerbils risk swallowing such materials, causing a blockage in their stomachs when they are unable to digest it. If you’re ever unsure about whether or not to use a type of material for gerbil nesting, simply don’t use it. Stick to safety. Many gerbil keepers provide to take the safe and cheap road for providing gerbil nesting material, simply using unscented, uncolored toilet paper, tissues, or paper towels. Just tear a few pieces into “gerbil sized” bits, and your gerbil will take it from there. When provided with the right kind of nesting material, your gerbil will proceed to shred and tear and “fluff” the nesting material and then create a very soft and comfortable nest in a corner or in a small area of the cage. You may wish to provide a “gerbil house” for your gerbil’s nest.

Sometimes the safest option is the cheapest one. Unscented and uncolored tissues ripped up to gerbil size provide perfect gerbil nesting materials.
