The Gerbil’s Nest |
Give Your Gerbil a Home for Nesting |
Gerbils love to sleep in fluffy, cozy, safe little nests. If they aren’t given any other option, they will usually choose to build the nest in the corner of their cage. However, they prefer a safe little “house” of some kind in which they can feel completely secure, just like they would in the wild in a burrow. Pet stores provide a good number of options for gerbil nest housing. Just keep in mind that no matter what you choose, your gerbil will likely chew on it, and it will need to be replaced over time. Wooden gerbil nest houses will be safer to chew, but are more difficult to clean when gerbils climb on top of them and urinate or defecate. Plastic houses aren’t as safe to chew, but will typically last longer, and are much simpler to clean. To encourage your gerbil to use his or her new nest house if he or she isn’t used to having it available, wait until the next time that you clean the cage (one of your weekly/bimonthly duties). Clean everything in the cage, including the new house, and place it inside the cage in an accessible place. Place most of the nesting materials inside the house so that your gerbil will begin shredding the materials while inside the house, and will then most likely continue with the process and build the nest there.
